Day 3 - Your Favorite Villain

Anyone who watches Doctor Who only thinks of two things when you say “villain”: The Master and the Daleks. These are by far the two biggest enemies in the show. And to me, the Master beats of the Daleks by miles. He’s charismatic, he’s funny, he’s a genius, and he has a history with the Doctor. Oh, and he’s batshit insane.

While I do love many of the show’s antagonists, reoccurring or not, they just don’t compare. I loved the Carrionite Witches from the Shakespeare Code, and many other favorites come to mind too. The Beast, Lady Cassandra, and the Family of Blood are the first ones I can think of.

The Master is by far the best though. His sheer brilliance balanced with irrefutable craziness makes him a great adversary. The Doctor looks at him and knows that this is what he would be if he weren’t such a fundamentally good person. One slip up - kill one person who could have lived, neglect saving one person’s life when he could have - and that spiral of carelessness could turn him into the monster that the Master is. The Doctor knows this, thus knowing that the Master could be a good man. He tries desperately to save him, to let him redeem himself, only to have his help shot down at every turn.

Watching a childhood relationship crumble due to blind insanity and unwillingness to accept help is tragic, and makes for some great episodes. That’s why he’s my favorite.

Day 2 - Your Favorite Companion

I love all of the companions for different reasons. Unlike most of the Who fandom universe, I don’t have a specific companion that I love and think should have stayed with the Doctor for eternity. I understand that it would have made for quite a boring show and needed to be switched up. I also don’t have any that I despise for some arbitrary reason. They’re all great in different ways.

Though I may get flamed into oblivion for this, Rose isn’t my favorite. I like her, but she’s a bit too whiny at times. Her unique relationship with the Doctor - the fact that he loves her as well - is the most interesting aspect of her character. My favorite part about the Rose seasons is actually Jackie, her mother. Also, her blonde hair and black eyebrows irritate the hell outta me. Though I have to admit I cried during Bad Wolf Bay.

Martha is smart and good at thinking on her feet. She is also a doctor, so that makes them a good match. She actually challenges the Doctor and makes him reconsider his ways, and she’s not a helpless twit that constantly needs to be saved. She’s actually saved his life on a few occasions. Also, her feelings towards him are heart-wrenching. It’s obvious early on that she fancies him, and that feeling only grows (while he remains oblivious) as she travels with him. It’s friggin’ adorable.

I love Donna because, in short, she’s a bitch. She’s the only companion that doesn’t have some kind of romantic feeling toward the Doctor. She doesn’t love him or want to have sex with him, she wants to travel the universe with this brilliant, impossible man. They have a mutual respect, but not so far that they won’t take shots at each other. I think the banter between the two of them is the best of all of the companions. I only wish that the Doctor Donna would have been around a bit longer. I absolutely loved her during that time. But noooo, her head was gonna explode. Pfft.

Amy Pond is a companion I’m still feeling out (and boy would I feel her out…) because she seems a little odd to me. Her relationship with Rory is confusing at best, being thrown off-kilter when the Doctor steps in and unwittingly sweeps her off her feet. She’s cute and funny, and a bit of a smartass, with a touch of the brashness and sarcasm you expect from a redhead. I just hate that she comes off as a whiny brat pretty often, as a lot of her dialogue boils down to “Why can’t we do what I wanna do?”. Her flip-flopping between helpless damsel and arrogant adventurer makes me think the writers couldn’t decide what character they wanted. But man, is she pretty. And she tried to fuck the Doctor.

Oh boy, look how patient you’ve been. I’m so proud.

Now we get to my favorite: River Song. Though not technically a companion yet, it’s established that she will travel with him (probably longer than any of the others) in the future. It’s also made clear that, if they’re not married, they’re an equivalent of such. River is strong and independent, and she’s not afraid to boss the Doctor around if he needs it. She’s firm with him, yet it’s obvious that she loves him more than anything in the world. The story between her and the Doctor is what makes me love her the most. The opposing time lines concept is fantastic, if a bit confusing at times. The Doctor is just getting to really know River, yet she dies the very first time we meet her at the point where she knows and loves him the most.

“Records indicate that you will show mercy. You are a companion of the Doctor.”

“I’m River Song. Check your records again.”

Day 1: Favorite Incarnation of the Doctor

Disclaimer: Be prepared for long posts. If I wanted to put up two sentences, I would have done this challenge on Facebook.

I have to go with the popular opinion on this one: David Tennant, the tenth Doctor.

Matt Smith, the eleventh Doctor, is a close second though.

Ten is my favorite mostly because of the equal balance of the other two Doctors I’m most familiar with: Christopher Eccleston (the ninth) and Matt Smith.  While Nine personified the badass side of the Doctor, he came off hot-headed and a bit too (roid-ragey) angry at times. It was actually a little exhausting to watch sometimes because he just seemed to be wide open all the time. Matt Smith, on the other hand, leans toward the “quirky and weird” aspect of the Doctor; not really ever having a plan, rambling like a madman, throwing (and yelling at) toast, etc.

Ten has a good balance of the two. He’s weird and surreal - as you would expect from a 900+ year old alien - but steadfast in his convictions to protect humanity and give everyone the choice of life. He switches effortlessly between witty banter with Martha and “save the universe” mode.

Oh and, lest I forget, he’s damn sexy.

I swear to god...

The next person I hear use the phrase “No offence, but…” or “with all due respect…” is going to get kicked in the throat. I’m not even going to let them finish their sentences. It’s always a pre-apology for saying something douchey that they’re not really sorry about to begin with.
