Seriously, how do you make GIFs?

bad-wolf-of-baskerville:

I’ve made a few. They’re not awful, but they’re not great. I used the best guide I’ve found so far, which is this one, and it involves VLC media player and Photoshop. You basically take several successive screencaps of the video using VLC, then use Photoshop to animate them together.

The guide says to hold the screencap button, but that doesn’t work for me because it won’t capture the images quickly enough so they’re too far apart. I have to unpause-pause super fast, screen cap, repeat. I still end up getting like 7 FPS though. I feel like it would be humanly impossible to get more than that.

But I still feel like there’s something I’m doing wrong, or that there’s a better method. I see photo sets full of stuff like

and

and they’re so smooth it looks like someone just cut out a chunk of the video and posted it. Then I make mine, which come out looking more like this one and that one (they’re too big to post). They’re jerky and low quality and just awful.

How do I fix this?

Success! Thanks to kstewarts and low-key-laufeyson, I’ve figured it out. This one particular example is a little too fast, but still good!

Not like I wanted my first decent gif to be something tasteful or artistic. NOPE.

alex is actually serious when they say when we get home from the airport they are feeding me no doze and watching the movies.

Sounds like a good plan to me.

I learned how to make GIFs.

Who has a request? I need the video file for the source of the GIF, so I may have to download it. I already have:

  • Dr. Horrible
  • Doctor Who
  • Sherlock
  • Game of Thrones Season One
  • Fringe
  • All six Star Wars movies
  • Spaceballs
  • Captain America
  • Thor
  • RENT
  • Sweeney Todd
  • Nightmare Before Christmas
  • V for Vendetta

Send me a message with the particular scene you want and I’ll make it for you.

“When you run with the Doctor, it feels like it will never end. But however hard you try, you can’t run forever. Everybody knows that everybody dies, and nobody knows it like the Doctor. But I do think that all the skies of all the worlds might just turn dark if he ever, for one moment, accepts it.” - River Song (Forest of the Dead)

If any of my followers would like to maybe talk or be friends or get advice or basically anything, I wouldn’t be against the idea. You can send me your email or MSN name, or whatever you use, and we could hang out on the interwebs. I promise you I’m cool, but I do talk a lot.

You don’t even have to be following me. If you saw my blog or something and think I seem cool, we can be friends.
